Taj Mahal sintered stone outdoor alfresco and BBQ bench in Sydney

Sun, salt and seasons.

An outdoor benchtop faces everything an indoor one does not: months of direct UV, driving rain, salt air near the coast, and a temperature swing between a summer afternoon and a winter night. Sintered stone is fired above 1200 degrees Celsius from natural minerals, so it does not fade, yellow, swell or need resealing. Composite stone is not recommended outdoors at all, because UV exposure degrades the resin binder that holds it together.

Every surface. Rated for outdoors.

Every colour below is UV stable and frost resistant, so the same surface works on an indoor island and an alfresco bench. Samples delivered within 48 hours.

Four reasons it beats granite and composite.

01

UV Stable

Colourfast in direct sun. Composite stone yellows and can crack outdoors, which is why manufacturers void warranties on external use.

02

Frost and Heat Resistant

Fired above 1200 degrees Celsius and rated for freeze and thaw, so it handles a Perth summer and a Melbourne winter.

03

Never Needs Sealing

Non-porous from manufacture. Granite is porous and needs resealing on a schedule, which is easy to forget on an outdoor bench.

04

Takes the BBQ

Direct heat from a grill or a hooded barbecue will not scorch or discolour it, and spilled marinade wipes off rather than staining.

Sintered stone outdoor kitchen with built in BBQ

The bench that lives outside.

An alfresco kitchen gets used harder than the one indoors: hot trays straight off the grill, drinks left out overnight, sunscreen, citrus and marinade. Sintered stone is non-porous, so none of it soaks in, and the surface can be cleaned with soap and water rather than a specialist product. Asetica supplies the same 31 colours for outdoor use as indoor, so an alfresco bench can match the kitchen it opens onto, with a 25-year warranty on both.

Outdoor Benchtop Questions.

What is the best benchtop for an outdoor kitchen in Australia?

Sintered stone is the most suitable material for an Australian outdoor kitchen because it is UV stable, frost resistant and non-porous. It will not fade in direct sun, does not need sealing, and handles heat from a barbecue. Granite is a workable second choice but is porous and needs resealing. Composite or engineered stone is not recommended outdoors at all, because UV exposure degrades its resin binder. Timber looks good but needs oiling every six to twelve months.

Can engineered stone be used outdoors?

No. Composite or engineered stone is not rated for external use, and most manufacturers void the warranty if it is installed outdoors. The resin binder that holds the crushed quartz together breaks down under UV, causing yellowing and cracking. Sintered stone contains no resin binder, which is why it is suitable outside and why it was excluded from Australia's July 2024 engineered stone ban.

Will an outdoor stone benchtop fade in the sun?

Sintered stone is colourfast, so it holds its colour in full sun. The colour is not a surface coating, it is fired through the material at over 1200 degrees Celsius. Some natural granites fade or change tone with prolonged UV exposure, and composite stone yellows.

Does an outdoor benchtop need sealing?

Sintered stone never needs sealing because it is non-porous from manufacture. This matters more outdoors than indoors, since an external bench is exposed to rain, sunscreen and food acids year round, and a missed resealing schedule on a porous stone shows up quickly as staining.

Can the outdoor bench match the indoor kitchen?

Yes. Asetica supplies the same 31 colours for indoor and outdoor use, so an alfresco bench can be cut from the same range as the kitchen island it opens onto. Both carry the same 25-year warranty.
