Calacatta Sintered Stone: The Marble Look Without the Maintenance
Reviewed by Team Asetica · Sydney · Perth · Melbourne · Updated June 2026
Calacatta sintered stone is a fired surface that replicates the bold white-and-grey veining of natural Calacatta marble, without the upkeep. Unlike real Calacatta marble — which is porous, etches from acids and needs regular sealing — Calacatta sintered stone is non-porous, heat, stain and scratch resistant, and never needs sealing, indoors or out.
Calacatta is the most sought-after marble look in Australian kitchens, but natural Calacatta marble is one of the least practical surfaces to live with. Calacatta sintered stone solves that: the same dramatic veining, none of the etching, staining or sealing. Here is how it compares, what it costs, and where it works.
- Calacatta sintered stone replicates Calacatta marble's white-and-grey veining — with no sealing, etching or stains.
- Non-porous, heat, acid and UV resistant; works indoors and outdoors, where real marble fails.
- Natural Calacatta marble runs $450–$900/m2 (premium $1,000–$2,500); sintered is comparable upfront and cheaper over 10 years.
- Choose marble only if authentic natural stone matters more than living with maintenance.

What Is Calacatta Sintered Stone?
Calacatta sintered stone is a large-format slab made by compressing natural minerals and firing them above 1200°C until they vitrify into a dense, non-porous surface with no resin. The veining is fired into the slab with inorganic pigments, so it runs true and stays colourfast. The name refers to the look — the cream-white ground with bold grey and gold veining of classic Italian Calacatta marble — reproduced in a material engineered to outperform the original.
Calacatta Sintered Stone vs Calacatta Marble
The look is near-identical; the performance is not. Natural Calacatta marble is porous, soft and acid-sensitive; Calacatta sintered stone is non-porous, hard and inert. The table compares them on what matters in a kitchen.
| Property | Calacatta Marble | Calacatta Sintered Stone |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Natural quarried marble | Fired mineral slab, no resin |
| Sealing | Required, regularly | Never |
| Etching / staining | Etches and stains (acids, oils) | Resists both — wipes clean |
| Hardness | Soft (Mohs 3–4) | Hard (Mohs 7) |
| Heat resistance | Good (can mark) | Excellent |
| UV / outdoor | Weathers, not recommended | UV-stable, warranted outdoors |
| Slab consistency | Varies slab to slab | Consistent, repeatable |
| Cost (material) | $450–$900/m2 (premium to $2,500) | Comparable upfront, lower over 10 years |
How Much Does Calacatta Sintered Stone Cost?
Calacatta sintered stone is broadly comparable to mid-range natural marble on upfront price. Natural Calacatta marble runs about $450 to $900 per square metre, with premium cuts reaching $1,000 to $2,500. The real difference shows over time: sintered stone needs no sealing and no restoration, while marble carries ongoing sealing and the risk of professional re-polishing after etching. Over ten years, the total cost of Calacatta sintered stone is usually lower. For an exact figure, price the specific slab, thickness and kitchen.
Where to Use Calacatta Sintered Stone
Because it is non-porous, heat-resistant and UV-stable, Calacatta sintered stone works anywhere you would want the marble look but could never risk real marble. Kitchen benchtops and waterfall islands are the primary use — the dramatic veining suits a statement island, and the surface shrugs off wine, citrus and hot pans. It also suits splashbacks, bathroom vanities, shower walls and outdoor kitchens. Available in 12mm and 20mm, with large-format slabs that let an island and splashback run in one continuous piece.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Calacatta sintered stone real marble?
No. Calacatta sintered stone is a fired surface made from natural minerals that replicates the white-and-grey veining of natural Calacatta marble. It looks like Calacatta marble but is non-porous, far harder and needs no sealing, so it performs better in a working kitchen.
Does Calacatta sintered stone stain or etch?
No. Calacatta sintered stone is non-porous and acid-resistant, so wine, coffee, lemon and oils wipe clean and do not etch the surface. Natural Calacatta marble is porous and etches from acids even when sealed, which is its main weakness in a kitchen.
Calacatta marble vs Calacatta sintered stone, which is better for a kitchen?
For a working kitchen, Calacatta sintered stone is better because it never needs sealing, resists heat, acids and scratches, and works outdoors. Natural Calacatta marble gives genuine stone character but is porous, etches and stains, and needs regular sealing. Choose marble only if authentic natural stone matters more than maintenance.
How much does Calacatta sintered stone cost in Australia?
Calacatta sintered stone is broadly comparable to mid-range natural marble on upfront price, while natural Calacatta marble runs about $450 to $900 per square metre and premium cuts $1,000 to $2,500. Over ten years sintered stone is often cheaper because it needs no sealing or restoration. Price the specific slab and kitchen for an accurate figure.
Can Calacatta sintered stone be used outdoors?
Yes. Calacatta sintered stone is UV-stable and frost resistant, so it keeps its colour in full sun and suits outdoor kitchens and alfresco benchtops. Natural Calacatta marble is not recommended outdoors because it weathers and yellows.
