Why Quartz Benchtops Are Banned in Australia
Engineered quartz is banned because cutting it produced dangerous crystalline silica dust. Traditional quartz benchtops were made by binding up to about 90% crushed quartz with polymer resin, giving a slab that was very high in crystalline silica. Fabricating it generated fine dust linked to silicosis, an incurable lung disease. From 1 July 2024 the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone with more than 1% crystalline silica was prohibited nationwide, with import enforcement from 1 January 2025, according to Safe Work Australia. In practice, you can no longer buy a new quartz benchtop in Australia.
What Replaced Quartz? Mineral Surface vs Sintered Stone
Quartz has two legal successors, and they are not the same. Mineral surfaces are engineered benchtops made largely from recycled glass — around 80% — bound with a UV-stable resin. Because glass is amorphous rather than crystalline, the finished slab stays under the 1% crystalline silica threshold, so it sits outside the ban; Caesarstone's ICON range is a well-known example. Sintered stone is different again: it is made from natural minerals compacted and fired above 1200°C with no resin at all. The key distinction is the binder — mineral surfaces still contain resin, while sintered stone contains none, which is why sintered stone handles heat and UV better.
Is Sintered Stone Affected by the Ban?
Sintered stone is not banned because it contains no resin binder. The prohibition targets resin-bound engineered stone specifically, so resin-free materials such as sintered stone and porcelain sit outside it. Heat, UV and Maintenance in Everyday Use
Sintered stone outperforms both quartz and mineral surfaces on heat and sunlight because it has no resin to degrade. You can place hot cookware directly on a sintered surface, while a resin-bound top can scorch or discolour under sustained heat above roughly 150°C. Outdoors, resin-bound surfaces are generally not recommended because UV can fade them, whereas sintered stone is UV-stable and frost resistant, making it suitable for alfresco kitchens and facades. Day to day, all three wipe clean, but sintered stone's non-porous surface shrugs off acids, oils and stains without sealing.
